The Book of Mormon, the Tony Award-winning musical by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, is set to be performed in Utah next year.
Mormon will be performed at the Capitol Theatre in Salt Lake City in summer 2015, reports the Associated Press. The hit musical, which has been performed on Broadway since 2011, will be produced within walking distance of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ headquarters.
Although the show openly mocks the Mormon church, the church did not denounce the production. Rep Jessica Moody gave the Salt Lake Tribune a statement that mirrored the church’s stance since the musical debuted in New York.
“The production may attempt to entertain audiences for an evening, but The Book of Mormon as a volume of scripture will change people’s lives forever by bringing them closer to Christ,” Moody said.
Mormon features music by Robert Lopez, who just won an Oscar for Frozen’s “Let It Go.” The Avenue Q writer is the youngest person to join the EGOT club, as he won two Tonys and a Grammy for his work on Mormon.
The production is part of the 2014-15 Broadway Across America season organized by MagicSpace Entertainment. There will only be 16 shows, beginning on July 28 through Aug. 9.
