California Sen. Leland Yee was indicted on Wednesday after being arrested earlier on charges of conspiracy to traffic arms and public corruption.
Yee and 25 others are alleged to be part of a crime ring that is run by Chinatown's Raymond Chow, reports the Los Angeles Times.
Yee and among others, former school board president Keith Jackson, were indicted on defrauding "citizens of honest services." Yee also was involved with a plan that traded campaign donations for firearms.
The state senator was also caught trying to get campaign donations out of an undercover FBI agent Yee thought was a businessman. Yee took him to meet with legislators involved in putting together a medical marijuana bill.
According to NBC Bay Area, Chow is believed to be the head of the Chee Kung Tong located in Chinatown. He faces charges of money laundering and conspiracy to traffic contraband cigarettes.
Other defendants arrested faced even more charges, including money laundering, drug distribution, murder-for-hire, honest services fraud and firearms trafficking.
Yee, a Democrat, represents District 8 in California, which includes San Mateo County and San Francisco. He was first elected in 2006.
