A California teen was struck and killed by a train on Sunday afternoon, after after she reached down to pick up her cell phone.

According to ABC 7 News of San Francisco, the Contra Costa Fire Protection District heard reports of a person being hit by a train around 5 p.m. The victim was identified as 14 year old Jenna Betti, who had been on the tracks with her boyfriend. While the friend made it safely out of harm's way, Betti went back for the cell phone she had dropped on the tracks. When emergency officials arrived, she was pronounced dead.

USA Today reports that Betti was in the eighth grade at Martinez Junior High School. On Monday, several students wore pink in memory of their fallen classmate.

The victims mother Dena Betti took to Facebook after receiving the devastating news.

"She didn't judge the approach," Dena posted. "And the train creates a vacuum, we were told, and it sucks you on. We are beyond devastated."
