A teenage father in California has been arrested for allegedly partially biting the nose off his infant child because he wouldn't stop crying.

Fairfield police have charged 18-year-old Joshua Cooper with suspicion of child cruelty and aggravated mayhem, reports Reuters. The baby's mother called the cops.

Fairfield police spokesman Troy Oviatt said in a statement, "one third of the child's nose had been severed off." The child also reportedly suffered from a fractured skull and his brain was found to be hemorrhaging.

The infant was initially taken to a local hospital, but had to be taken to Oakland's Children's Hospital and Research Center.

According to KXTV, Police Sgt. Troy Oviatt said that Cooper bit the baby's nose after becoming angry and frustrated "that he was not able to ease the child's crying."

Police noted that they found part of the nose at the scene and realized where all the blood was coming from and it doesn't appear that alcohol or drugs were involved.

Reuters noted that if found guilty, the maximum sentence for Cooper would be a life sentence with the possibility of parole.
