Today, Sunday March 23rd, German customs officials stop shipment of cocaine filled condoms being sent to the Vatican.
Leipzig airport officials found 340 grams (12 ounces) of cocaine packed into 14 condoms, reports the New York Post. The street value of the shipment would be several tens of thousands of euros. The shipment was packed hidden in the middle of cushions coming from South America.
The package was addressed to the Vatican postal office, meaning any of the 800 of the Catholic mini-state’s residents could have picked up the package. A sting operation was put into place, with the help of Vatican police, in an attempt to find the intended recipient, says Fox News. No one attempted to claim the package, originally suppose to be delivered in January, which police believe is an indication of the intended recipient being tipped off.
Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi states that the Vatican police were cooperative with German police the attempt to discover the smugglers. The investigation will remain open.
