After being kicked out of a Virginia McDonald's an elderly couple in their 80s have been offered free meals for life.
The couple was enjoying their normal routine snack at McDonald's which they call "scrunch" (between supper and lunch), when they were approached by an employee who was cleaning up the store. Dust started flying and the employee who was cleaning asked if that bothered them. When the couple told her that it did "if you like to eat dirt," the manager appeared and told them to leave.
”I never had an experience like that in my life," Carl Becker said.
WTTG Fox 5 noted that there were no signs found anywhere at the Culpeper McDonald's which indicated a 30 minute time limit for customers.
The couple left the restaurant and laughed things off, but Ms. Becker did let the manager know what she thought about his training and when they got home, Mr. Becker wrote a letter to the editor and sent it to the Culpeper Star Exponent. Once the story was published, it quickly spread across the Internet.
When Shawn Moss, the owner of Shawn's Smokehouse BBQ in Culpeper, saw the story he immediately knew he wanted to do something special for the couple. He decided to offer the a pair free "scrunch" one day a week for life. Since Mr. Becker was a World War II veteran, Moss decided to also do a 'Scrunch Day' on Wednesday where he offers free coffee to all seniors and veterans.
Yahoo! News noted that McDonald's corporate office sent the couple coupons for two free small coffees as an apology, but Ms. Becker refused the offer and sent the coupons back.
"I care deeply about the comfort and satisfaction of my customers. My organization takes these matters seriously, and is investigating the customer's claims. I have also reached out to the customer to extend my apologies for this misunderstanding. Our focus will continue to be on serving our customers and providing them a welcoming experience," explained the Culpeper McDonald's franchise owner, Bob Drumheller.
Drumheller assured the couple that they plan to continue training the employees at the Culpeper McDonald's. The couple says they will still eat at McDonald's, but will not return to the Culpeper location.
