The film, Noah, takes first place at the box office this weekend.
The story based on Biblical text, stars Russell Crowe in the title role. According to the Associated Press, the movie opened with a box office numbers of $44 million.
Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky directs this controversial film. The filmmaker said that he has always been inspired by these types of stories. Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, and Russell Crowe star in the picture. The film has been banned in Indonesia. It was also banned in the United Arab Emirates because the movie depicts a prophet.
Originally religious groups took offense to the story. Paramount was asked to put a disclaimer in from the film. In the end, Paramount released the film in the United States without a disclaimer as they thought that “artistic license” had been taken on the film.
According to the LA Times, the movie cost $130 million to make. Other movies doing well at the box office this week include Divergent starring Shailene Woodley and Muppets Most Wanted featuring Tina Fey and Ricky Gervais.
