Fans of the popular book series written by Veronica Roth, Divergent, are heading to the theaters to see the feature film adaptation.
The film is on track to make an estimated $60 million at the box office during its opening weekend, Variety reported.
The film has already taken in $4.9 million during late night shows on Thursday and a source has predicted that the film could take in $22.5 million from Friday showings. The movie, which stars Shailene Woodley, is on track to make around $50 million to $53 million by the close of the weekend.
The film stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet. The story focuses on Woodley, who is forced to decide which fraction of society she will enter upon completing an aptitude test. The different fraction of societies are separated by class and status.
The other competition that Divergent is facing is the sequel to the popular Muppets film, which made only $4.7 million on Friday, Forbes reported.
The production team behind Divergent is hoping to capitalize on the Hunger Games and Twilight success.
