A student at Beech Hill Elementary School in South Carolina reportedly told police he brought a loaded gun to school to protect another student.

According to ABC News 4, the boy told police last Tuesday that a fellow student was “acting like a psychopath” and was going to kill another student with a knife. He claimed to use the loaded gun only as a threat to get the knife away.

The boy with the gun was later confronted by school authorities and the police were called. Both weapons were confiscated and an investigation is underway. Both of the boys have different stories pertaining to what actually happened.

Both boys were taken off of campus, and the school sent letters home to all the parents in the school the following morning. Officials also found out that a bus driver knew about at least one of the weapons and did not report it. Instead, she told the boys not to have the weapons again. The school district has reportedly fired said bus driver for failing to report the issue.

The Post and Courier reports that no disciplinary action towards the boys has been announced at this time.
