Entenmann’s Bay Shore bakery closing in July

Entenmann’s baking company will be closing another one of its bakeries this year, cutting 178 jobs.

According to Newsday, the New York based pastry makers will be closing their historical Bay Shore bakery in July.

The south shore establishment has been producing pastries and cakes for more than 50 years since opening in 1961 and the closing will affect 178 of the 265 workers who are currently there.

“After a crucial assessment, it was apparent that the facility cannot operate efficiently on a cost-competitive basis with other bakeries in our system,” Entenmann’s parent company, Bimbo Bakeries USA said in a statement earlier this week.

Workers, customers and Long Island officials are upset by the news, one worker telling NBC, “I am still numb, but I can’t say anything about it.”

NBC also reports that many Entenmann’s employees are refusing to comment on the loss of their jobs due to rumored threatening of workers’ severance packages if they talk to reporters.

David Schanel, a 33-year-old employee, told NBC that he loved the company, “I raised a family here, two kids. Time to go for interviews.”
