Two people are dead and many more are injured after an explosion destroys two buildings in East Harlem.

According to the Associated Press, Con Edison spokesman Bob McGee said, "We're working with the FDNY and checking gas lines. We're working to isolate any leaks and make the area safe."

This statement comes after Con Edison has shut down gas mains. Two crews were immediately sent to the area after 9:15 a.m. A leak was reported 15 minutes before the blast occurred. Fire trucks sprayed water, and ambulances brought over 17 injured people to medical centers. Police set up barricades around 1644 and 1646 Park Avenue at 116th Street. Both buildings have collapsed.

According to Reuters, commuter trains were stopped due to debris. Service was interrupted on the Metro-North.

New York City authorities are working to make certain that relatives are able to find people whose whereabouts are currently unknown. A hotline has been created, and concerned residents can call 311 for additional information.
