Revelers gathered along the parade route as the Carnival continues at Mardi Gras.

The muses kicked off the Mardi Gras celebration in New York. Fat Tuesday is the day of celebration before Ash Wednesday. Fat Tuesday was declared an official holiday in Louisiana in 1875.

According to the Associated Press, "I was at Muses and caught a coveted shoe and I already got a (Zulu) signature coconut, so I'm ahead of the game.”

According to USA Today, Mark Romig, president and CEO of New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corp., said that krewe is a “fanciful spelling of crew.” Krewes are organizations that put on festivities for Mardi Gras. Each organization has a King and Queen who ride the parade floats.

On Saturday, the Krewe of Iris, the oldest women’s Carnival organization, led their parade. Other parades have been making their way through town. The Zulu parade began on schedule, led by a New Orleans police vanguard on horseback. The floats of Rex, the king of the Carnival, also took their place on the parade route.
