Focus Features may be coming to the rescue for Keanu Reeves. Just days after The Weinstein Company and Rachel McAdams left his Passengers for dead, the indie distributor is reportedly close to picking it up.

The Weinstein Company made a big move at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival to pick up the project, which at that time had Reese Witherspoon attached to co-star. Witherspoon eventually dropped out, but with McAdams onboard to replace her, TWC had the movie scheduled for an April 2015 release.

However, it all fell apart last week, with McAdams leaving. TWC took it off its schedule and then ultimately decided to leave altogether, notes IndieWire.

On Wednesday, TheWrap reported that Focus is ready to swoop in. Nothing has been signed or confirmed and Focus wouldn’t comment, but Focus would get domestic distribution of the sci-fi project. However, there still isn’t a replacement for McAdams.

All this happened just weeks before director Brian Kirk (Game of Thrones) was about to get the cameras rolling. He’s directing from a Jon Spathis (Prometheus) script.

It centers on a man whose sleeping chamber malfunctions during a deep-space journey. Feeling lonely, he wakes up a woman early and the two fall in love.
