A Georgia teenager spent nealry $31,000 that was mistakenly deposited into his bank account and now the bank wants it back.
According to the Athens-Banner Herald, on March 7, a man with the same name as the 18-year-old attempted to deposit $31,000 at a First Citizens Bank branch in Madison County, Ga., but because of a teller error, the money was put into the wrong Steven Fields account.
Ten days later, the man who deposited the lump sum, complained to the bank that he was missing money.
It was then found out that the teller had deposited the money to the incorrect account.
The 18-year-old Fields didn’t bother to mention the mistake to anyone at the bank and had a good time with the extra cash. Authorities said he withdrew $20,000 and made $5,000 in purchases with his ATM card.
He was confronted when he returned to make another withdraw though and the bank said they wanted all the money back.
ABC News noted that the bank gave Fields a deadline of March 19 to payback the money or they wanted him prosecuted. As of Thursday, charges have not yet been filed.
