Grace, the film and TV production company owned by Josh Wakely, just acquired the worldwide rights to The Beatles’ entire music catalog from Sony/ATV Music Publishing for an animated children’s series.
According to Variety Grace has the rights to use the music but not the rights to the actual records of The Fab Four, so they will have to have other musicians and singers cover the songs. The new series Beat Bugs is an original creation from Wakely.
Deadline noted the show uses original narratives interwoven with Beatles songs to tell the story of young bugs that live and learn life lessons in the magical universe of an overgrown backyard. Talks are still underway with animation studios and companies for distribution, worldwide rights will be sold by CAA and Hirsch, Wallerstein, Hayum, Matlof & Fishman.
In other animated Beatles news, the animator for the movie Yellow Submarine is appearing at this year’s South By Southwest. Rolling Stone reported Ron Campbell, who also directed the Saturday morning cartoon The Beatles has an exhibit at local gallery Wild About Music, where he has been showcasing original paintings created for the cartoon series. The exhibit, which opened Saturday March 8, will run until March 15.
