Following brutal rains across Italy, UNESCO world heritage site Pompeii saw yet another collapsed wall on Monday.
According to The New York Times, three sites in Pompeii suffered damage from the recent rains and flooding. First pieces of an arch in the Temple of Venus crumbled on Saturday. Then on Sunday, a tomb wall in Porta Nocera fell to the ground. Italian culture minister Dario Franceschini wrote of the damage to Pompeii in a tweet on Sunday night.
“During the night Sorrentino won the Oscar and another wall came down in Pompeii,” Franceshini posted. “It’s a lesson: believe in beauty we have and protect it with pride.”
Reuters reports that the damage comes with criticism of the European Union’s Great Pompeii Project intended to restore the historical site. As the project began in April of 2012, many claim that little progress has been made thus far.
The wall which collapsed on Monday was said to have been part of an ancient workshop. It had recently been reconditioned with the inclusion of an iron bar.
