Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, a wealthy arts and fashion patron, died on Monday at age 103.
Mellon’s grandfather was the inventor of Listerine. Her father was the president of Gillette, according to Forbes.
Her family said that she died of natural causes at her 4,000 acre Oak Spring Farms in Virginia. According to the Associated Press, Forger said, "She was involved in the business of nature and beauty, design and implementation."
Mellon would be remembered for her contributions to the world of horticulture, art and fashion. Mellon was asked by her friend, Jacqueline Kennedy to design the White House Garden. Mellon was also known for her taste in fashion and in decorating. Her wardrobe was created by Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga. After that, French designer Hubert de Givenchy became he designer of choice, according to a 2010 Vanity Fair article.
Mellon also had interests in collecting art. Her art collection included a Rothko worth $125 million..
She and Paul Mellon were philanthropists and had homes in Antigua, Paris, New York, Washington, Nantucket and Cape Cod. Until she was 100, she practiced pilates, which she learned from Joseph Pilates in the 1950s.
