The High Court of Delhi has upheld the death sentences of the four men convicted of gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman.

According to CNN, the men were initially sentenced to death last September and female judges, Justices Reva Khetrapal and Pratibha Rani of the High Court of Delhi upheld the death penalty for four of the six men. A fifth man hanged himself while in custody last year and a sixth, who was a minor when the crime was committed, was sentenced to a maximum of three years in a juvenile facility.

The brutal crime has gripped the Indian nation ever since the news broke.

The Times of India noted that on December 16, 2012, the men lured the victim and her male companion on board a vehicle and assaulted them both. The woman succumbed to her injuries and died on December 29, 2012.

"Death reference is accepted. Death sentence awarded by the trial court is affirmed. The appeals of the convicts are dismissed," the bench said.

The victim’s family was present for the verdict and said that they expected it and are satisfied with the ruling.
