Oklahoma-based retail giant, Hobby Lobby, is appealing the Affordable Care Act in response to providing health insurance to its employees for birth control. On March 25, lawyers will argue the case before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Several Christian-based companies, groups, and institutions are fighting Obamacare because of their beliefs regarding birth control and contraceptives within their faith, CNN reports.
David Green, whose family owns the craft store, said that his evangelical Christian beliefs do not agree with the law’s mandates for coverage. They said that certain contraceptives, including the Plan B or “morning after” pill, prevent human embryos from being implanted in a mothers womb, which in their minds, equals abortion.
Hobby Lobby states that their retail outlet represents a variety of faiths and does provide coverage for 16 of the federally approved forms of birth controls including condoms and diaphragms for its 13,000 employees.
Lynn M. Paltrow, founder and executive director of the National Advocates for Pregnant Women, wrote in a blog for The Huffington Post that if Hobby Lobby wins their case, “women will experience unplanned pregnancies.”
