Iraqi journalist killed by military officer

An Iraqi journalist was shot and killed in Baghdad on Saturday.

Mohammed Bdaiwi, the Baghdad bureau chief of Radio Free Iraq, was headed to his office when a military guard got in an argument with him and shot him dead, reports CNN. After the incident, the guard quickly went inside the gated area he was working for. He was eventually sent to Iraqi police after Iraq's prime minister demanded his arrest.

"Anyone behind this will stand trial," Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki said. "Blood for blood. This is a violation of law."

Bdaiwi was also a media professor at a Baghdad university.

According to BBG, the gated compound that Bdaiwi was shot at not only holds his place of work, but also houses the presidential residence as well as various other offices.

The NY Times reports that the military guard, who is Kurdish, is currently still in police custody.

After the shooting, many media activists reportedly picketed at the sight where Bdaiwi was shot.
