Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Jason Campbell signed a one-year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday. He will be Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton’s backup. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Campbell, a nine-year veteran of the NFL, was the quarterback for the Oakland Raiders in 2010 and 2011. In addition to playing with the Browns and Raiders, he has also played for the Washington Redskins and the Chicago Bears. He broke his collarbone midway through the 2011 season, which caused the Raiders to make a trade with the Bengals for Carson Palmer, according to the Associated Press. In Cincinnati Campbell will be reunited with Hue Jackson, who was his coach when he was with the Raiders.
"Jason obviously has extensive playing and starting history, and as a backup [to Bengals starter Andy Dalton], he can provide the stability and experience we're looking for in that role," Marvin Lewis, the Bengals coach, said in a statement.
Campbell made eight starts with the Browns last year. He had 2,015 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, according to ESPN. He had a passer rating of 76.9. In his career Campbell has 16,697 passing yards, 87 touchdowns, and 60 interceptions.
The signing of Campbell is a good thing for the Bengals. He adds depth to the quarterback position and the Bengals believe that Campbell knowing Jackson can be a benefit for Dalton.
