Jason Sudeikis is set to continue his movie career by playing a character a fellow Saturday Night Live alum once played. The Meet the Millers actor is reportedly set to star in Fletch Won, a reboot of the Fletch franchise that starred Chevy Chase.
Fletch is an investigative journalist character created by Gregory McDonald in 1974 and appeared in 11 more novels. Chase played the character in the 1985 film Fletch, which was followed by 1989’s Fletch Lives.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has been working on a reboot since 2011, when it obtained the screen rights. The studio heads could never find the right writer, until David List, a rep for McDonald’s estate, came along. List is producing with Steve Golin and Michael Sugar of Anonymous Content.
CinemaBlend notes that some of the names mentioned in the past have included director Kevin Smith and actors Jason Lee and Ryan Reynolds. But none of that materialized.
THR reports that the studio has approved of the new script and Sudeikis is in talks for the role. The next issue is finding a director, although the studio is apparently already set on how they want this movie to look. They’re hoping for something akin to Midnight Run or Beverly Hills Cop.
Sudeikis, who spent 10 years on SNL, will next be seen in Tumbledown with Rebecca Hall and is set to make Sleeping With Other People and Horrible Bosses 2.
