Dottie Sandusky, the wife of former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky, said that her husband of 37 years in innocent. Jerry Sandusky has been convicted of child sex abuse and will likely spend the rest of his life in prison.
Sandusky spoke with Today’s Matt Lauer, who asked if she believed her husband. “I definitely believe him,” she replied. “Because if I didn't believe him, when I testified at trial, I could have not said what I said. I would have had to tell the truth.”
She suggested that the victims may have been influenced by money. “Once lawyers came into the case, they said there was money,” she said.
She also told Lauer that she did not believe some of the inappropriate behavior the victims accused her husband of. “I believe he showered with kids. That’s the generation that Jerry grew up in,” She said. “There were always people coming in and out no matter what time that was.”
Filmmaker John Ziegler was also with Sandusky during the interview, which took place at the Sandusky home in State College, Penn. Ziegler said that showering with boys is wrong, but that it’s not the real reason why Sandusky’s in prison.
“That's not why he's probably going to die in prison and has had his pension taken away,” he said. “That's not why Joe Paterno was unjustly fired and three Penn State administrators are facing losing their freedom over this case.” Ziegler also believes that Sandusky is innocent.
Sandusky insisted that she is not a “weak spouse,” adding that she was nicknamed “Sarge” for trying to keep people in line. “If they want to say that, let them say that. I know who I am. And I know who Jerry is. And I know he did not do the horrible crimes that he's convicted of,” she told Lauer.
Sandusky was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison after being convicted in June 2012 on 45 counts of sexaully abusing boys over 15 years.
