Johnny Weir has opened up for the first time about his troubled marriage to Victor Weir-Voronov. He revealed that his husband was abusive and that their fights would often turn physical.
In an interview with Access Hollywood on Thursday, the former ice-skater spoke about his reasons as to why he filed for divorce from Voronov, which he had announced on Wednesday.
“It wasn't often, but...we're boys, boys fight, boys wrestle boys," Weir said. "It was usually good humored wrestling, but a few times, of course, it did get physical and...some of my closest friends have seen him hit me before,” reports Us Weekly.
Before leaving for Sochi to cover the Winter Olympics, the couple had gotten into an altercation, which ended with Weir biting his husband. He was arrested and the two went to court, but the charges were eventually dropped by Voronov, according to Contact Music.
“Sochi was one of the hardest times in my life," the 29-year-old said. "When I was on the broadcasting, I escaped my own personal hell that I was living in.”
Weir also claimed that Voronov wanted to play the role as a traditional partner, and he ultimately gave up his career as an attorney, which led to relying on Weir for money.
“I was supporting two people and whether it seems like a big deal or not, I come from a lower middle class family that has to work, no matter what,” Weir stated.
Weir filed for divorce on February 12, while still in Sochi. He took to Twitter on Wednesday to announce his divorce to the public.
