Keanu Reeves career is going somewhere and it’s not up. After 47 Ronin failed to revive his career, the former Matrix star has been dealt another blow. Passengers, which The Weinstein Company had made a big deal about acquiring last year, has been taken off the studio’s schedule.
Passengers was picked up by TWC during the 2013 Cannes Film Festival when Reese Witherspoon was attached to co-star. Reeves’ Company Films was developing the project with a script from Jon Spathis (Promitheus). Brian Kirk (Game of Thrones) was set to direct.
The ambitious sci-fi plot centered on Reeves talking an Alien-esque trip, in which his other crewmembers are put to sleep for a long voyage. Reeves’ sleeping chamber wakes him up 90 years too early and he falls in love with a woman whose chamber also malfunctioned.
At some point, Witherspoon dropped out and Rachel McAdams was picked. But The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the Notebook star is out now, too.
TWC had scheduled it for April 3, 2015, but with McAdams gone, the studio has taken it off the schedule. THR’s sources said that Kirk was actually ready to go in Germany, but the production has been delayed.
Reeves has been struggling to get his career back on track, as 47 Ronin only made $146 million at the box office. Universal spent $175 million on the critically panned historical drama.
