TV pitchman Kevin Trudeau was sentenced on Monday to 10 years in prison after being found guilty last year of deceiving people over his weight-loss book.
U.S. District Court Judge Ronald Guzman said that the 51-year-old will also have to serve an additional five years of supervised release for criminal contempt. "He is deceitful to the very core," Guzman said of the 51-year-old, reports Reuters. "That type of conduct simply cannot stand."
In 2004, a federal court settlement said that Trudeau must not exaggerate about the contents of his books. It seems as though he didn't learn then as last year he was found guilty of criminal contempt for violating the previous settlement with his book The Weight Loss Cure "They" Don't Want You To Know About.
At sentencing, Trudeau apologized for deceiving those who purchased his book and claimed he had since changed, according to The Associated Press>.
The deceiving ads for his book ran over 32,000 times and prosecutors said they couldn't find anyone else who cheated people so boldly.
His defense lawyers tried to get a two-year prison sentence as they argued that the book only cost people $30 and it wasn't like the "defendant's actions shattered lives."
