Authorities in Mexico have confirmed killing drug cartel leader Nazario Moreno three years after he was reported dead.
Former Mexican President Felipe Calderon announced back in 2010 that Moreno had been killed during a shootout, reports CNN. Mexican officials announced Sunday that the death report was not correct. The federal government said that while Moreno was reported to be fatally shot, it was never proven that he had been killed. Many people reported seeing Moreno after the incident.
Finger print testing has proven that, this time, the slain person is in fact Moreno, but officials are still awaiting DNA results.
Moreno reportedly passed on the head leadership position in his drug cartel to Servando Gomez, a former schoolteacher. Authorities found Moreno in Naranjo de Chila, according to the Washington Post. Police asked Moreno to turn himself in, but he instead opened fire and was killed.
Moreno is also known as “The Craziest One,” “El Chayo,” and “The Doctor.” BBC reports that during his drug cartel reign he trafficked drugs to over 50 countries.
