People in Mexico are honoring Mexican Nobel Prize poet and essayist Octavio Paz on the 100th anniversary of his birth.
Readings of his poetry are happening around Mexico. The country is also celebrating the special day by having a postal stamp and a lottery ticket with his likeness. They will also be organizing special events in the main plaza outside the Senate building, according to the Dallas News. Some of the events could include Paz’s famous 1950 essay, The Labyrinth of Solitude, according to the Associated Press.
Paz was known to discuss a Mexico that was not a Mexico of violence but of beautiful poems. Paz won the 1990 Nobel Prize in Literature. Paz often found himself in the middle of political controversy. He was the writer of many television documentaries including De la independencia a la revolucion. He has also worked as an actor in the television series, El martes que viene.
Paz was married to Maria Jose, and the couple was sometimes in New York City. Paz died in 1998 in Mexico City.
