The pregnant woman who drove herself and her children into the waves in Daytona Beach, Fla. on Tuesday has been charged with attempted murder.

According to WESH, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office announced on Friday that Ebony Wilkerson has been charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse.

Detectives believe that the 32-year-old had every intention of killing her children and herself before they were all rescued by heroic Samaritans.

“She told them 'close your eyes and go to sleep,' she was taking them to a better place,'" said Sheriff Ben Johnson.

WCSC noted that an incident report states that Charleston, S.C. police say Wilkerson decided to go to Florida and be with her family on Sunday, after allegedly being sexually assaulted by her husband the day before.

Police have said that her sister told a 911 operator that Wilkerson had been acting strange just prior to when she drove into the surf with all three kids in the car screaming for help.

The children remain in the custody of Florida Department of Children and Families.
