The New Jersey teenager who sought child support, college tuition and payment of legal bills from her parents after she moved out, has dropped her lawsuit against them.
According to The Star-Ledger, Rachel Canning, who moved back in with her parents last week, appeared in court on Tuesday and testified that she has decided to dismiss her complaint. The teen’s parents were present in the courtroom.
Judge Peter A. Bogaard ruled that Canning's "decision to dismiss the litigation was a knowing and voluntary decision."
CNN noted that Canning had alleged in her lawsuit that her parents had forced her out of the house and therefore she was unable to support herself financially. The teen’s parents, however, said that the 18-year-old left the house because she did not want to follow their rules.
Earlier this month, a judge refused to grant the honor student an emergency order requiring her parents to pay her bills.
The case received national attention, but now the family will try to heal without the glare of the media spotlight.
