Navy officials identify civilian who shot sailor on base

U.S. Navy officials have identified the civilian man who shot a sailor after he gained access onto a destroyer ship docked at Virginia's Naval Station Norfolk.

According to the Associated Press, prison records show that Jeffrey Tyrone Savage was a convicted felon. In 2008, he was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and 10 years before that, he was in prison for possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute.
Records also indicate that the 35-year-old was a Maryland resident and employed as a truck driver.

CNN reported that late Monday night Savage breached security and boarded destroyer USS Mahan where he fatally shot Petty Officer 2nd Class Mark Mayo before Navy personnel killed him.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities are still trying to piece together how Savage was able to board the ship and what his intent was. They believe he may have been able to get on base using his transportation credentials.

A Navy spokesperson said that officials are awaiting the results of a toxicology report on Savage.
