On Monday, the U.S. Navy SEALS took control of a hijacked commercial tanker in the Mediterranean Sea.
According to The New York Times, the diverted tanker was flying a North Korean Flag when it arrived at the Libyan port of As-Sidra. North Korea denied authorization and that the ship was theirs. Later, officials learned that the ship was actually operated by a company in Alexandria, Egypt and that after leaving the Libyan port, it sailed through the Mediterranean waters possibly looking to sell oil on the black market.
CNN reported that the tanker, called Morning Glory, was taken over by Libyans earlier this month. However, the forces were called off by the Navy and the SEALs boarded the ship in the international waters near Cyprus.
The Pentagon said that both governments of Libya and Cyprus called on the United States to help intercept the ship and President Barack Obama gave the green-light on Sunday evening.
No one was injured during the operation.
