Almost a million jars of peanut butter are going to be dumped in a landfill in New Mexico.

The Associated Press reports that the peanut butter came from a peanut-processing plant that was the major cause of a salmonella outbreak back in 2012. As a result, Costco Wholesale refused to sell the product and also refused to donate the products for fear of another outbreak.

Bankruptcy trustee Clarke Coll stated there was nothing wrong with the peanut butter, but Costco deemed the product “not merchantable” and would only agree to its disposal.

The 950,000 jars, estimated at about $2.6 million in value, will be taken to the Curry County landfill where it will be covered in dirt.

Newser reports that the jars of peanut butter have been sitting in a warehouse since last fall while Costco was determining what to do with the product. The decision to destroy all of it was made of March 19.

The peanut butter jars will be taken to the landfill later today.
