Need for Speed staring Aaron Paul was in the fast lane when it came to the box office this weekend, coming in third place with $17.8 million at the box office. The film enjoyed some strong social media buzz over the weekend.

The movie was based off of the popular video game which has sold over 150 million units worldwide. This popularity helped to build social media buzz for the racing film. Need for Speed had over 16 million fans on Facebook and the trailer had over 28 million views on YouTube going into the opening weekend, Variety reported.

Speed also has 262,000 Twitter followers and a very popular Tumblr account.

The main star of the film, Paul, has 1.7 million followers on Twitter and just over 1 million on Instagram. The Breaking Bad star was helping to drive the social media buzz from his own personal accounts.

The film also did well at the box office internationally, making $45.6 million in foreign markets, MTV added.
