DreamWorks and Disney's Need for Speed might have won Friday, but almost certainly will lose the weekend to DreamWorks' other film, Mr. Peabody & Sherman.
Need for Speed snagged the Friday win with $6.6 million, and the film is tracking to earn a less than impressive $18 million in its first weekend. Forbes reports the film cost $66 million and suffered from miserable reviews.
DreamWorks and 20th Century Fox's Mr. Peabody showed life at the theaters on Friday with $5.45 million at the box office, with projections for the weekend likely around $21 million, which should be good enough for the top spot on the weekend. The animated film has grossed $63 million so far, which isn't stellar, but not awful either.
Warner Bros. and Legendary's violent film 300: Rise of an Empire actually earned more than Peabody with $5.8 million, and is projected to earn about $18 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That would place it in the race against Aaron Paul's new film for the second spot.
Tyler Perry's new film The Single Moms Club is looking like it might be a flop after grossing only $3.2 million on Friday. The film is projected to earn $9 million on the weekend, which would be the worst opening for any of the director's films.
Warner Bros. new film of the weekend Veronica Mars is doing well, earning $1 million from only 291 theaters. Now open in 66 theaters, The Grand Budapest Hotel earned $1 million on Friday and is projected to gross about $2.2 million for the weekend.
