The NFL salary cap has risen, and the 2014 value is set at $133 million. This marks a $10 million jump.
According to CBS Sports, the NFL sent out a memo to all 32 teams that the salary cap will be higher this year. This allows them to spend more freely as free agency approaches.
This marks a huge bump since the salary cap rose by just $1.4 million in 2013. The salary cap is expected to rise even more in 2015, according to NFL. There are new television deals in the equation that will run from 2015 through 2020. This is part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement that was agreed to after the 2011 lockout ended.
Only two teams were over the salary cap on Thursday afternoon as reported by USA Today. The Dallas Cowboys are at the highest with $150.9 million, followed by the Pittsburgh Steelers at $138.7 million.
Free agency is scheduled to begin March 11, and this salary cap bump is expected to give every team a much bigger cushion.
