Noah began its box office conquest with modest numbers for early Thursday screenings. The new film from Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky scored $1.6 million already.

According to The Los Angeles Times, that number is a bit better than Gravity, another anticipated drama from a respected director. Alfonso Cuaron’s space epic brought in $1.4 million on Thursday in October before it grossed $56 million over its first weekend.

Noah isn’t expected to reach Gravity heights, though. Some analysts predict an opening around $35 million to $40 million. That would be enough to push Divergent to second place.

The film is also doing well overseas. Deadline reports that the film has already made $2.75 million in Russia. The film also made $750,000 on its first day in Australia, the home of star Russell Crowe.

Noah was released early in South Korea, where it has made $10.2 million already. It has also grossed $8 million in Mexico.
