The fight for the top spot at the weekend box office could come between Liam Neeson and Jesus as both Non-Stop and Son of God had a strong Friday at the box office.
Universal's new Neeson action flick earned $10 million on Friday, reports Forbes. Non-Stop is projected to earn $30 million, which would be a good start for the $50 million film, though the film likely won't last beyond this weekend near the top of the box office.
Son of God did well on Friday with $9.4 million, but nearly half of that was from advanced ticket sales, so it remains to be seen how well the film holds up for Saturday and Sunday. The re-cut, shortened version of Roma Downey and Mark Burnett's miniseries The Bible could likely hit $25 million for the weekend.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the ruler of the previous two weekends, Warner Bros.' The Lego Movie slipped to the third spot and earned $4.4 million. The film has already made $192.7 million at the domestic box office and should easily pass the $200 million mark by weekend's end.
Other new release, Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises hit theaters with an English dub and grossed $460,000 and could likely earn about $1.5 million for the weekend.
