PETA is slamming Bindi Irwin, the daughter of the late Steve Irwin, for her partnership with SeaWorld given their controversy of allegedly mistreating animals.
The 15-year-old Irwin announced her role as their youth ambassador on Good Morning America on Thursday, along with her mother and brother.
ABC News notes Irwin took on the role in order to carry on her father’s legacy, who died in 2006.
However, PETA is not happy with it, releasing the statement saying her family "has been exploiting animals for years, so it comes as no surprise that Bindi has agreed to become SeaWorld’s latest shill. But plastering her face on SeaWorld’s website won’t cover up the fact that orcas, dolphins, and other animals are suffering in SeaWorld’s tiny tanks after being ripped from their families.”
They also mention the controversial documentary Blackfish, saying, SeaWorld is “no place for anyone who truly cares about animals. Bindi’s talk-show appearances are just a flimsy last-ditch effort by an abusement [sic] park hoping to make a buck.”
The Huffington Post reports Irwin is excited about the new opportunity regardless. Her role as youth ambassador is “all about encouraging kids to get involved and be game-changers for wildlife and wild places," she said.
Blackfish is a documentary exposing how the killer whales at SeaWorld are really treated, which has garnered a lot of support since its release.
