Norm Lewis will be making history by joining the cast of Phantom of the Opera in the upcoming Broadway stage show. Lewis will be the first African-American to play the lead in Phantom.

Lewis is known for his work on the recent revival of Porgy and Bess and is a Tony Award nominee.

Lewis, in a recent phone interview with The Associated Press, expressed his excitement about joining such a well known and famous Broadway show. "I'm overwhelmed. The idea of doing something that I've always wanted to do and it coming to fruition is amazing," said Lewis.

He went on to explain what an honor it was to join the cast and make history. "I love the show but also to have hopefully set a precedent to see more diversity in casting," said Lewis.

Lewis is also known for his brief role on the ABC hit Scandal.

Lewis will be starring opposite Sierra Boggess who will be playing Christine. Their show run will start on May 12, 2014. Boggess is no stranger to Phantom. She played Christine in the 25th anniversary production of the show at the Royal Albert Hall in London and in the Broadway 25th Anniversary cast last year.

Phantom has grossed more than $5.6 billion worldwide and has been seen by over 130 million people in 27 countries, Variety added.
