On Thursday, President Barack Obama ordered new rules for working overtime. These rules consist of more employees being eligible for overtime pay.
According to USA Today, Obama signed a presidential memorandum that permitted the Labor Department to look at changes to make this eligibility possible.
Republicans are frowning upon this new memorandum signed by Obama, along with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. They claim that these new rules will turn into less jobs and hours overall for American workers. Proponents of the bill say that it will boost the economy though, according to NBC News.
Obama said that businesses are forcing millions of Americans to make less money than they deserve, explaining that employees are being classified as professional or administrative. This allows businesses to avoid the overtime laws, and some employees have only made as little as $23,660 a year.
The president acknowledged that not everybody will be happy with these new rules, but he said that hard work needs to be rewarded.
