Two years after calling it quits the alternative pioneers are returning in the form of almost a dozen unaired songs from their two MTV Unplugged performances.
R.E.M. will drop Unplugged: The Complete 1991 And 2001 Sessions on vinyl for Record Store Day on April 19th, but the four-LP set will be available on CD and the Internet May 20th.
USA Today notes that the group is alone in performing for the MTV series more than once, first in 1991 and again in 2001. The 1991 performance consisted mostly of songs from the legendary Out of Time album released that year, and the second featured songs from 8 of the band's 12 albums at that point, including 2001's Reveal.
According to Rolling Stone a full reunion of the band is not likely. Bassist Mike Mills told the magazine last year "if we honestly thought there was a chance of a reunion tour, we might have said so at the time." On the bright side, Mills will be at the Bull Moose shop in Scarborough, Maine on Record Store Day to sign copies of the new release.
