The Obama administration announced new sanctions against Russia, with Russia quickly following suit by banning nine American officials from the country.

Earlier on Thursday, President Barack Obama announced that several more individuals associated with the Russia government are to be hit with sanctions, along with a bank, reports The New York Times.

An executive order was also signed that would allow the administration to aim sanctions at Russia's industrial sectors, with most of the focus likely to be energy exports.

Russia responded by issuing travel bans to almost 10 officials, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker John Boehner, according to NBC News.

In a statement, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "We have repeatedly warned that the use of sanctions instruments - double-edged things - boomerang on the United States itself."

Others targeted in the travel bans include Arizona Sen. John McCain, Senate Foreign Relations Committee head Bob Menendez, White House advisers Ben Rhodes, Caroline Atkinson and Dan Pfeiffer and then two senators, Mary Landrieu and Dan Coats.

Some who were banned went to social media or issued statements proudly proclaiming their happiness at news. Boehner's spokesman Michael Steel released a statement noting, "The Speaker is proud to be included on a list of those willing to stand against Putin's aggression."
