Another Hasbro toy line is getting a movie. Jem and the Holograms, which also inspired an animated series during the 1980s, will be reaching the big screen thanks to John M. Chu, Scooter Braun and Jason Blum.
The trio announced the news themselves on YouTube and they have already started a Twitter page. Blum’s Blumhouse Productions and Scooter Braun Productions are producing the movie and they hope to start filming as soon as this spring, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
They will be updating the property “for a whole new generation with themes of being true to who you are in a multitasking, hyperlinked social media age.” The show ran from 1985 to 1988 and told the story of Jerrica Benton/Jem and her Holograms band.
Blum is better known as the producer behind cheap, hit horror films like Paranormal Activity and Insidious. Chu and Braun both have connections to the music industry, as Braun is Justin Bieber’s manager and Chu has directed Bieber’s concert movies.
Chu also directed G.I. Joe: Retaliation and the second and third Step Up dancing movies.
