A shuttle bus carrying 16 passengers on their way back from a birthday party struck a guardrail and overturned, leaving one man dead.
According to The Washington Post, the bus was headed down Interstate 95 when a white Acura sedan swerved into the lane and in front of the bus. The bus swerved to avoid the car, causing it to hit a guardrail and overturn, Virginia State Police say.
The passengers were in their early 20’s and were coming home from a party at a club in Washington, D.C. All 16 passengers were taken to hospitals in the area.
Two of the passengers were critically injured and flown to a hospital in northern Virginia, while a man named David Alberto Sanchez, was later pronounced dead, reports USA Today.
Although the car initially fled the scene, it was found by police at 6:10 a.m. on Sunday, a few hours after the accident.
“Witnesses were able to provide us with a license plate and we were able to track that vehicle down at a residence,” State Police spokeswoman, Corine Gellar said.
Police arrested Raphael Manuel Barrientos on count of a hit-and -run.
“It's going to be a long road for these kids. The thing is we always preach to these kids, do the right thing. They did the right thing,” said Pat Tierno, a father of one of the passengers. “They rented a bus, yes they wanted to go out but they rented a bus and this is what happened.”
