Butch Vig, Dave Grohl, and Billy Corgan have come together in a trailer proposing a documentary about Madison, Wisconsin’s Smart Studios.
Each of them share anecdotes about the studio and how it came to boost the careers and albums of Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins and Fall Out Boy. The studio hopes to collect monetary donations on Kickstarter and already has $25,000 donated pledges. The goal is to receive $120,000 by March 30th, according to Rolling Stone
If the documentary receives proper funding, it will tell the story of how Vig and Steve Marker founded Smart Studios. The studio called it quits in 2010 and has seen its fair share of music genres from punk bands to recording Death Cab for Cutie’s Plans and Narrow Stairs.
"Butch was one of the first producers to come out of the underground that really wanted to turn your noisy garage band into something that the whole world would love," Grohl stated in the video clip.
There are multiple artist interviews including Shirley Manson, Death Cab’s Chris Walla,m L7’s Donita Sparks, Against Me!s Laura Jane Grace and more as reported by Rock Cellar Magazine
"It's pretty fascinating when you think of Smart Studios, all the magic moments that happened in basically this little sh*thole," Corgan said.
Rewards are included for helping the documentary funding and consist of dinner with Vig and Marker as well as skull caps and autographed posters. If all goes according to plan, the documentary would be available to the public by October of 2015.
