Max Brooks is becoming a favorite author around Hollywood. The World War Z author has already provided the material for one box office smash, now The Harlem Fighters may be another one. Sony has won the screen rights to the new graphic novel from Brooks.
The Harlem Fighters is the latest project Sony has acquired under new chief Michael De Luca, who is now president of Columbia Pictures production. He’ll oversee the new project for the studio, reports Deadline. Overbrook Entertainment’s Caleeb Pinkett and James Lassiter are producing.
The new graphic novel, which is illustrated by Canaan White, will be published on April 1 by Broadway books, reports The Hollywood Reporter. It tells the story of the Army’s 369th infantry division, an African-American unit that fought bravely during World War I. They spent more time in Europe during the war than any other American unit. Brooks traces their journey from enlisting in Harlem, to training in South Carolina and finally to arriving in France.
Brooks is best known for writing World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, which was turned into the surprisingly successful Paramount movie starring Brad Pitt last year. The film made $540 million worldwide and a sequel is in the works.
There are currently no writers attached for The Harlem Fighters.
