Stooges drummer, Scott Asheton, has died at the age of 64. Although few details surrounding his death have been released, lead singer Iggy Pop honored him in a Facebook post on Monday.
The post read, “My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night. Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother. He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world.
The Ashetons have always been and continue to be a second family to me. My thoughts are with his sister Kathy, his wife Liz and his daughter Leanna, who was the light of his life.”
According to Detroit Free Press, Asheton’s family couldn’t be reached for a comment about his death on Sunday night and the cause of his death is still unknown. His brother, Ron Asheton, a founding member of the Stooges, died in 2009.
The Stooges, formed by the Asheton brothers and Pop, got together 1967 and their first album was 1969’s The Stooges. They split in 1974 but reunited for a reunion tour in 2003. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
MTV News notes Asheton has inconsistency performed since 2011 due to issues with his health.
