This week’s new releases run the gamut on topics. There’s a film that focuses on religion and, on the completely other end of the spectrum, there are others that have killers and a nymphomaniac. For some family friendly fun, famous puppets are back with a new caper. One of the most highly anticipated releases, however, is the film debut of a popular book.

In a world separated by human virtues, someone that is not like the rest is cast aside in Divergent. A young woman with special abilities doesn’t fit in with any group. She, along with others like her, are the targets of a faction leader. They must find out what it is that makes them a threat before they are hunted. The PG-13 action/adventure film is based on Veronica Roth’s popular book series. The two hour and twenty-three minute film stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ashley Judd, Zoё Kravitz, Mekhi Phifer and Kate Winslet. It’s available in 2D and IMAX theaters.

A Kermit lookalike is the world’s top criminal in Muppets Most Wanted. In a case of mistaken identity, Kermit is kidnapped and put in jail while his evil doppelganger poses as him and infiltrates the Muppets Global tour as he prepares for a major jewel heist. Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell and Tina Fey star alongside the Muppets in the PG caper. The family comedy plays for one hour and forty-six minutes.

The question God’s existence is the focus of the PG film God’s Not Dead. When a student is forced to denounce is faith in God by his philosophy professor, he risks a failing grade by sticking with his beliefs and is determined to prove His existence. The one hour and fifty-three minute drama stars Willie Robertson, David A.R. White, Shane Harper, Kevin Sorbo and Dean Cain.

A crooked-running race horse surprises its trainers and the racing world in 50 to 1. In the limited released film, a group of New Mexico cowboys get a chance at the big time when their longshot horse qualifies for the Kentucky derby. The unlikely success story is based on the true story of Mine That Bird. The PG-13 film runs for one hour and fifty minutes.

A group of teens believe they found an extinct bird in their neighborhood in A Birder’s Guide to Everything. On a mission to make bird history, the teenagers set out on an adventure to find the species again and in the meantime learn about life and love. The coming of age story is rated PG-13. The dramatic comedy is playing in limited theaters for one hour and twenty-eight minutes.

A straight laced cop takes in his ex-con brother in Blood Ties. With his brother released from prison for good behavior, Frank decides to share his home with him with the hope that he’ll put his murder rap behind him and turn his life around. Despite starting on a straight and narrow path, his life of crime continues to follow him. The two hour and twenty-two minute film stars Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, Austin Williams, Mila Kunis, Marion Cotillard, Zoe Saldana and James Caan. The limited released crime thriller is rated R for violence, drugs, sex and language.

A former soap opera actor tries to revitalize his career by becoming a writer in Maladies. The line between reality and his imagination is blurred as he envelopes himself into his own world and gets distracted by the voice in his head. James Franco, Catherine Keener and Alan Cumming star in the unrated comedic drama. The one hour and thirty-six minute film is playing limited theaters.

The late Cory Monteith stars alongside David Morse in the limited released film McCanick. The one hour and thirty-six minute film takes place over the course of one day as a detective searches for a newly released prisoner. The ex-con knows a secret about the cop trying to find him. The crime drama is rated R for drugs, violence and language.

Losing his job and facing eviction, a man does whatever he can to make some cash in Cheap Thrills. Hoping to hide the bad news from his wife, he gets involved in an embarrassing and ridiculous game of dares to earn some extra dough. The unrated, one hour and twenty-five minute comedic thriller is available in limited theaters.

A guitar carrying drifter walks into a small town and provides inspiration for a local woman to achieve her goals in Falcon Song. The two work together to save her grandfather’s ranch. The PG family western is playing in limited theaters for one hour and forty-nine minutes.

Through the use of flashbacks, Nymphomaniac: Volume 1, tells the story of a self-proclaimed nymphomanic. She reminisces about her past after she is rescued from violence. The unrated drama stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, Stacy Martin, Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater and Uma Thurman. It’s running in limited theaters for one hour and fifty-seven minutes.

A man and his girlfriend go on a robbing spree in Rob the Mob. The limited released crime thriller is a Bonnie and Clyde type of tale. After hearing about a mob hangout where the gangsters aren’t allowed to bring their guns, Tommy decides that is a prime place for a hold up and a chance for him to avenge the brutal beating of his father. He robs multiple mob-run locations while his girlfriend drives the getaway car. The film runs for one hour and forty-four minutes. It’s rated R for drugs, sex and language.

A film that was never made is the focus of the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune. Many people were scared of cult filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky’s creativity and refused to be involved in what was supposed to be an epic sci-fi film. Despite never coming to fruition, many of his ideas were mimicked years later in popular films. The PG documentary plays for one hour and thirty minutes. It’s available in limited theaters.

Authorities search for a serial killer in John Doe: Vigilante. Having only murdered people who have committed horrible crimes, there is controversy over whether or not the man should be celebrated or punished. The crime thriller runs for one hour and thirty-three minutes. The limited released film is rated R for violence and language.

A famous case of sexual harassment is highlighted in
Anita. The one hour and twenty-six minute documentary shows the struggles Anita Hill went through during and after she testified against Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas. Her deposition changed the way the country viewed workplace conduct and gender equality. The unrated film is available in limited theaters.

Religion plays a key role in this week’s God’s Not Dead and also influences one of next week’s new releases, Noah. The drama Chavez and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s thriller Sabotage also debut on March 28.
