A 16-year-old teenager collapsed and died on Sunday, just moments after she finished a half marathon in Virginia Beach.
According to WRIC, friends and family are in shock that Cameron Gallagher died after crossing the finish line at the Shamrock Half Marathon.
Gallagher finished the 13.1 mile race in 2 hours and 19 minutes with her best friend Abby Donelson.
"We were walking away with our arms around each other and she said like 'I'm going to pass out.' And then she just kind of went down," said Donelson.
The New York Times reported that the teen crumpled to the ground at 9:30 a.m. She was first treated at an aid tent and then rushed to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, but doctors there were unable to revive her heartbeat and she died at 11 a.m.
Gallagher was a sophomore at Douglas Freeman High School and active in many sports. This past season she swam for Douglas Freeman’s club team.
“We’re very saddened by this tragic loss, and our thoughts are with Cameron’s family,” said Henrico County Public Schools spokesman Andy Jenks.
